PT5540 Directions

Find your way to Yucca Valley, CA. From the Twentynine Palms Highway, SR-62, take La Contenta Road (an intersection with a stoplight) due south. La Contenta is paved for the first mile. Cross Alta Loma Road and continue on the dirt road for 1.8 miles, veer left at the Y intersection toward Covington Flat. Continue 5.75 miles into Joshua Tree NP to a marked intersection. Turn right and continue to the dead end and parking area at Eureka Peak. From the parking area it is not obvious which of the two peaks is PT5540. It's the east-most peak. Hike a short quarter mile of typical desert terrain to the summit - maybe 100' of gain. The dirt road to Eureka Peak and PT5540 from Covington Flat is freshly graded and can be easily traveled via passenger car as of this post (January, 2015). This has not been the case for my previous visits where a high clearance 4x4 was required. PT5540 lies within Joshua Tree NP:
